Why Miami?
A Hub for Regional Preparedness and Innovation
As a global gateway and one of the most active international transit points in the Western Hemisphere, Miami International Airport (MIA) and the Port of Miami play essential roles in disaster response, logistics coordination, and humanitarian relief throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Miami’s robust emergency management ecosystem—featuring top institutions like Florida International University (FIU), Miami-Dade County Emergency Management, and the Florida Department of Transportation—makes the city a real-world classroom for best practices in crisis planning, coordination, and continuity of operations.
This workshop will allow participants to explore firsthand how Miami has built resilient, collaborative frameworks for managing threats ranging from natural disasters to cyberattacks. Attendees will gain insight into successful models of inter-agency coordination, infrastructure resilience, and inclusive emergency planning.
A Leading Center for Training and Collaboration
Miami is also home to the UNITED NATIONS International Training Center CIFAL Miami Center, part of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) network. With its mission to build capacity and promote sustainable development, CIFAL Miami brings together stakeholders from government, academia, and the private sector to foster real impact across the region.
Participants will benefit from engaging with local experts and international speakers in an immersive training environment that blends practical case studies, scenario-based exercises, and access to cutting-edge research and technology in emergency management.
Cultural Capital Meets Global Connectivity
Beyond its professional strengths, Miami is one of the most vibrant and multicultural cities in the U.S. From its celebrated cuisine and rich artistic scene to its stunning beaches and iconic neighborhoods like Wynwood and Little Havana, Miami offers countless opportunities for connection, reflection, and post-event exploration.

Travel
Whether you’re traveling from across the United States or from abroad, getting to Miami is convenient, well-connected, and efficient.
For U.S. Domestic Travelers
Miami is easily accessible from all major U.S. cities, with nonstop flights from hubs like New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of the busiest airports in the U.S. and offers extensive domestic flight options with major carriers including American Airlines, Delta, and United.
For International Travelers
Miami is an international hub, welcoming direct flights from over 100 cities worldwide, including those in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Canada. MIA offers full customs and immigration services, and its multilingual support staff and signage make arrival and transit seamless for international guests.
We recommend that travelers from abroad:
- Check visa requirements and apply in advance if needed (e.g., B-1/B-2 visa for business visitors).
- Have a valid passport with at least six months of validity.
- Confirm any additional documentation or entry guidelines based on your country of origin.
Airport staff and visitor services at MIA are equipped to assist with international arrivals, currency exchange, baggage services, and directions to the city’s many hotels and neighborhoods.
Travel Tip
We recommend arriving a day early (October 5 or 6) to participate in the optional cybersecurity seminar (October 6, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm) and welcome reception (October 6, 6:30 pm) at FIU’s Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, a great way to connect with fellow attendees and get acclimated.
